New York Baby Naming Ceremony
New York baby naming ceremony for Chloe was at the Atlantic Grill, near the Lincoln Center. It was a brunch party.The party place filled with the guests quickly and I got busy. In a setting like this there are lot of candid photo opportunities, which I love! This was my first time photographing a baby naming ceremony. I love photographing events that give me opportunity of experiencing and appreciating different cultures or religions. The ceremony was officiated by Rabbi Greg D. Weitzman of Congregation Rodeph Sholom.
During the baby naming ceremony Chloe was trying to get hold of the lollipop in her elder sister’s hand. I thought that was pretty funny and finally she did manage to grab it!
I had arrived early to get a feel for the venue, as I always do. The party area had a large window but on that day the sky was overcast and I was not going to get any useful window light. High and dark ceiling in a large space with ambient indoor mood lighting is not ideal, but the photographer needs to know how to make the best of any situation. I had to use direct flash with a diffuser and with moderation, to maintain the mood of the warm ambient lighting. I chose to try the Gary Fong and it’s all right, although flash bounced off white ceiling would be better.
I always look for opportunities of candid portraits at events like these, and I was glad to get a few that I really like, in spite of the fact that I was using on camera flash and hard highlights were un-avoidable.
The Atlantic Grill is a pretty popular destination for a weekend brunch and as I left the hall I saw every table was occupied in the main hall. I have to check it out one of these days!
