Livingston NJ Family Photo Session
Tamara wanted to have a photo session for her holiday card. We needed to find a location nearby that also provided some nice fall color hues. We selected the South Mountain Reservation recreation area next to the Codey Arena in West Orange, NJ.
The day was clear and sunny, but a little chilly and windy. The session was to start at 5PM. Although light would be nice for quite some time, the window for our session was pretty narrow as the sun was going to go behind the ridge. And just at that time some clouds were rolling in. Fortunately, those were not too threatening and provided some softness for the strong afternoon sun.
Tamara had warned me that the boys were not too keen about getting photographed, which was not a surprise to me as I have a son about the same age as her older one. But it seemed that she had prepped them well, apparently bribed them with promises of IPad games if they would co-operate during the photo session. The kids were great, really and I didn’t have any problem whatsoever.
Typically photo sessions are between one and one and half hours. This was planned to be a really short session, about 30mins only. I needed to find couple of spots nearby that would photograph well in the nice light, which was not going to last too long.
I don’t like to do posed shots, or do shots that appear posed. I had to think of something quick to take at least some shots of the boys, which would be used for the holiday cards, that would not appear posed.
I asked the boys to walk toward me and took some shots. Then I asked them to have a conversation on a small foot bridge nearby. After taking a few long ones, I moved to get some closed shots.
