The world around is us three dimensional. Our photographs are not. Successful photographs are those that make us feel otherwise. When we speak about depth in a photograph, among other things, we could be referring to the way in which the photographer has used form to her advantage, and that is why it is crucial to know how to use form in photo composition.

I like how the photograph, which I took at Washington Square Park, New York City, uses smooth taut form of the woman’s legs as a contrast against the background of rough pavers. This contrast creates a sense of depth. The pattern created by the curved steps is nicely broken up the sweep of her crossed legs nicely ending in rich black tone of her shoes – the effect is sensual.

I took the photo of the Mesquite Dunes, Death Valley National Park in early morning light. Many people have asked if these are really sand dunes. The framing, the effect of morning light and the compressed perspective of a telephoto lens creates abstract forms that play tricks with the mind.

Photographers explore form in human figure study creating images using studio light. Without a studio and a model, the best I could do was to explore the human form at the Gay and Lesbian Parade in New York City under the light of strong mid-day sun, which was softened by a thin cloud cover thus helping to show the fine detail of the sculpted bodies against dark background. The store sign helps to complete the story.

Form is often explored in still life photography. The picture to the right pops out and holds our attention in spite of it being a mundane everyday object.  The gentle folds in the white and the smooth elevated dome of the yolk is a perfect example of how form can be explored to make a photograph successful.

Inspiration to make your next killer photograph is everywhere – willingness to discover and knowing how to use light is all it takes.
