Engagement Photo Shoot – New Jersey Botanical Garden

An engagement photo shoot is a great idea. And once you are ready for it, follow these 9 Tips For Engagement Photo Shoot for an awesome prelude to your wedding album.

Location

Which kind of location do you prefer –  urban or countryside?  Once you have decided the type, shortlist a few spots and discuss these with your photographer. If you prefer a city, you might even be able to split the shoot between a couple of favorite spots.

Theme

Do you share a common interest or hobby? Is there a favorite activity that you want to make the theme of the photo shoot?  One of  my clients wanted to to an ice skating themed photo shoot. It was winter time and a photo shoot at Bryant Park open air skating rink in New York City was a winning choice. In another case, the favorite activity was museums and we planned a shoot at the Metropolitan.

Timing

The location will have an impact on the timing of the shoot. Generally, the timing will be morning or afternoon, avoiding the middle of the day. The location may very well determine if it will be afternoon or morning. You should let your photographer make the final call. If you are opting for a city location, you many want to incorporate a night shoot as well.

Outfits

This is a matter of personal choice, however it is a very important matter. Here are some ideas on clothing. But feel free to take these as guidelines only. You might want do dress in a coordinated way – or not, however  your clothing should reflect your personalities.

Props

Other than outfits, you might want to include simple props – such as a musical instrument, a parasol or anything else that is part of your lifestyle. Even a pet, if you so wish.

Hair and makeup

Get your hair, makeup and nails professionally done, and this includes men. Yes, you want to appear casual, but not shabby. You definitely want to appear fresh.

Be Yourself

Be yourself and let go. Show your emotions and don’t think about the photographer too much. That way your photographs will truly be wonderful. This will also help you prepare for your wedding day, when you also need to be completely at ease, but in front of many other people.

Do Some Research

Sometimes it is hard to come to a final decision about how the photo shoot should be. You might find the right inspiration by browsing other photo sites and portfolios of other photographers. When you have a shortlist, bounce your thoughts off your photographer.

Paparazzi Style

One of my personal favorites is to do the shoot paparazzi style. You pretend to be the celebrities and the photographer will be the paparazzi. The photographer will follow your around but will have no control of what you will be up to. On one moment you decide to hang out in a coffee shop, the next moment you choose to check out a street fair. And its the photographer’s job to return with some very unique shots. Yes, it has an element of risk – that all shots may be not be perfect, but the storytelling capability of this style is unique. If you find the right photographer, you might hit the jackpot.
